| What IS Ham Radio? | |||||
| Amateur Ham Radio basically is a communication system that has many forms; Hand-Held stations (HT's), Base Stations, Mobile Stations, Laptop, PC Stations, Voice, Morse Code (CW). RTTY, Satellite, short-wave, Hi or Low-frequency, Earth-Moon-Earth bounce, digital (packet) & even SlowScanTV. All forms use internationally recognized terms & are governed by internationally accepted codes of conduct enforced by members, ARRL & FCC. Maybe you remember some old cowboy shows & you saw the rider arrive at the telegraph office for an important message. The telegraph operator was using morse code. Maybe you remember the movie about the sinking of the Titanic? They used morse code to send 'S.O.S'. In World War 1 & World War 2, the soldiers valued the radio operators on land, sea & air. When the 911 terrorist attacks disabled 'modern' communications in New York, amateur radio operators came to the rescue, because ham radio functions even when 'normal' electrical power & 'normal' communications fail. The ability to operate in adverse conditions also became apparent during the hurricanes, including Katrina -ham radios worked. Many people today rely on telephone, computers & email. What if you could send messages from your laptop without phone lines? With digital, RTTY, or packet ham radio -you CAN! |
